Unite, Senior Industrial Organiser, Peter Kavanagh says,
“Unite welcomes any initiative that will enhance the safety and security
of our members who operate the buses and the travelling public. Compared to
other occupations, London bus drivers suffer some of the highest assault
rates. Unite trusts that the mayor will be speaking to the union that
represents these 28,000 bus workers in London about this critical issue.”
“Questions remain on how this scheme will be funded and even bigger
questions remain on the precise funding of some of the mayors other transport
initiatives, which were raised during his election campaign.”
“Over the last few years, the number of buses and the number of
passengers using the Buses have increased very significantly. Our members are
playing an increasingly critical role in ensuring the success of this city,
yet in many respects their status in the job market does not reflect this. We
are determined to ensure that this is addressed and we will be stepping up
our campaign to deliver fairness for these essential workers.”
